Tref y Clawdd RFC v Old Tyleryan RFC - Match Report: John Beavan Runs the Show!

31st January:

After losing 14 -12 last week to Cwmcarn United RFC with only 2 minutes to go, Trefy needed to start again the climb back up the league table.

On a very wet pitch, Trefy knew they had to start well against a side they only narrowly beat last time. With almost a full strength squad, the home side kick off and began to take it to Old Tyleryans. It wasn’t long before the boys were rewarded following a great forwards play, which found the power house that is John Beavan who forced his way over the line. Glen Penlington successfully converted the try making it 7 - 0  with just six minutes gone. Old Tys tried to retaliate by picking up pace but again Trefy’s forwards dominated the play, with Danny Bird making his way over the line. Although the kick was missed, Trefy were now 12 - 0 up and from that point the boys never looked back, turning the pressure into points. Yet another try from John Beavan, successfully converted made it 19 - 0. This was followed by a second try from Danny Bird 26-0 and a first for George Morgan, both converted to make it 33 - 0 at half time.

During the second half, John Beavan treated spectators to a master class of all round forward play that, at one point, found him cruising up the wing, offloading to Glen Penlington and cutting back in to set up another try, which Glen, as scrum half, nipped across the line and converted to make the score an impressive 40 - 0 at 55 minutes played. Old Tys kicked of again, this time forcing the Trefy boys back to their own five metre line. However, the ball was turned over and Trefy’s outside centre forced his way through the pack and, with a side step and change of direction, wrong footed Old Tys centres and headed for the line. With only the opposition’s full back to beat, he unloaded to winger Sam Protheroe who went over to seal the game at 45 - 0.

The Trefy boys are now back up to 4th in league. Deserved Man of the Match was John Beavan who put in an outstanding performance. The team are away next weekend to Forgeside RFC with a cup tie against Builth Wells RFC (Seconds) on 14th February.
